2016 onwards : Launched Tech Age Girls Myanmar which train 16-20 year old girls with ICT and soft skills. Initial one-year project with 20 libraries was supported by IREX in 2016.  We have received grant from ISIF's Community Impact Grant and Microsoft to continue the project in 2017 by supcporting additional 20 libraries under our project title, “Equal Access to Information Society in Myanmar”.

The Need
Tech Age Girls Myanmar
Tech Age Girls – Myanmar (TAG) will identify promising female leaders between the ages of 14-18 from throughout the country and provide them with essential leadership and job skills through an engaging, integrated program based at public libraries. TAG prepares them to be both role models to their peers and competitive candidates for 21st century employment.


Program Overview
Tech Age Girls (TAG) will work with a select group of Myanmar girls without other access to technology training in IT and leadership skills to improve their job skills and help them become role models for youth in their communities.

Over the past year, Beyond Access Myanmar has launched a nation-wide program to provide shared technology through community libraries in more than 50 hub communities across Myanmar. The initiative, a collaboration of MBAPF, Ooredoo, the Ministry of Information and IREX is bringing digital literacy and new learning opportunities to people in Myanmar.

Libraries have started offering technology and guidance in making use of the internet, but there is still disparity among those benefiting from this new service. Data collected by libraries indicates that library tablets are being used twice as much by men and boys as by women and girls. In Myanmar, the technology sphere is dominated by males, with women largely left out of this rapidly expanding field.

Libraries have the potential to provide a neutral space for women and girls to learn and develop new skills. As a trusted community institution, libraries are the ideal base to serve women in gaining the skills in demand in a 21st century economy. But this will only happen if there is a coordinated effort to reach them and provide a support system that helps them apply their new skills in productive ways.
